I graduated in 2000 from the University of Arizona with a BA in Elementary Education.  I am certified to teach grades K-8.  In Tucson, I taught science and reading in a mid school – grades 6 – 8.  I’m a single parent, and I also did foster care for ten years, particularly with teenage boys.  In 2008, my daughter left for college, and I decided I wanted a change.  So I came to New Mexico and taught 6th grade science and reading at Turquoise Trail.  I love the many outdoor activities that Santa Fe has to offer.

As an educator, my goal is to inspire students to work to their potential and support them with the tools to get there.  I love mid school; it is such a great time to support students in the impact they will make on community.  At that age, they are trying to figure out who they are, while others are telling them who to be.  They need people who are there to support and guide them to use critical thinking to make their own choices.  I believe all students can be successful, they just need the right strategies to get there. Learning in a classroom does not just happen because there is a teacher in the room. A teacher must have the ability to utilize effective classroom management and implement different modalities of instruction to reach the unique and diverse students we serve.

I am the 7th grade reading teacher at SFIS; previously I taught 7th grade science here.  Ms. Russell and I had team taught together before, and now we have the chance to do that again.  I am glad to be here – I think that SFIS offers a way to really impact our local community.  Students here come from rich backgrounds anchored in culture.

Students here at SFIS bring with them a set of core values from home. The most important core value is giving back.  Giving back is how we grow and learn about others, as well as how we feel good about our own self-worth.  Without supporting each other we don’t expand, we don’t grow.  If we are not giving back, then we are not helping, and we are not growing.  Being an educator gives me that opportunity every day to give back.

My passion, then, piggybacks on the core value of giving back.  I want to inspire others to help create unity.  It is important that we see the good in ourselves and the good in others.  I use the gifts God has given me to give back to others.  I am active in my church, where I am inspired by the elder member’s wisdom.  I volunteer at the local homeless shelters here in Santa Fe and am always looking for ways to expand the ways I can give back to my community.
