James Jordan

I have Bachelor degrees in Art, Psychology, Native American Studies, and Asian Studies. I received my Master of Science degree in Counselor Education at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. In 1992, I graduated from the University of Denver with my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology.

I have worked as a pizza delivery guy, carpenter’s mate, waiter/bartender, working my way through colleges. My first professional jobs include: Mental health case-manager in Oklahoma; Drug and Alcohol Counselor in St. Louis, Missouri; Emergency room psychiatric evaluator; and, Psychological testing in Colorado. I have also worked as: An art therapist in Australia; A university counselor and child therapist in Denver; A community psychologist in Nome, Alaska; and a behavioral health specialist in Baghdad, Iraq for the Department of State. In addition, I’ve taught for over 10 years as a psychology professor in Colorado, Japan, New Mexico, and China.

I joined SFIS in September 2013 – and plan on staying in one place. This rolling stone wants to gather some moss. I am from the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, born in California.  I love working with Indian people as a school psychologist; I get to help students develop many things in their life.  In counseling, we often touch on perseverance, social skills; identity, as well as the unique issues that each individual brings with them. I love my work because it is about human growth, being genuine, the realization of potential, and the inherent spirituality in our students.
