Snow Day Procedures

PDF Version [119.1 K]

Dear Students, Parents/Guardians, and Staff:

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you of our “Snow Day” procedures. The inclement weather procedure at SFIS is unique because of our residential program. Please remember that we do not follow public school delays. The decision to delay or cancel buses will be made by the Superintendent in coordination with transportation and safety personnel. Bus drivers always have the option not to drive when local conditions make driving unsafe.

When possible, SFIS will announce delays/closings the evening before, or by the latest 6:00 a.m. the morning of a storm. As weather conditions are monitored throughout the day further adjustments may occur. Generally, the “Snow Day” options are as follows:

  • Two-hour bus delay. Classes follow the normal daily schedule. Staff members are expected to be at work at on?time unless driving is unsafe. Day students must eat breakfast at home.
  • Day buses cancelled. Classes follow the normal daily schedule. Staff members are expected to be at work at on?time unless driving is unsafe.
  • One-hour dorm student delay. If the buses are cancelled and staff are delayed in traveling safely to work, we will implement a one?hour delay for dorm students. Breakfast is served one hour later than normal and classes start one hour later. Staff members are expected to arrive as close to schedule, as possible. Dormitory staff are expected to stay until the dorm students report to class.
  • Early dismissal. If bad weather begins after students are already at school, a decision may be made to release the bus students early. If so, tribal offices will be notified, Messenger will be utilized, and a message will be recorded on the SFIS Safety Line.

We will communicate delays/closings by posting on local television stations, send email/text messages from the Messenger system, and by pre?recording messages on the SFIS Safety Line.

  • TV Stations: Channel 2 (FOX), Channel 4 (KOB), Channel 7 (KOAT), Channel 13 (KRQE).
  • SFIS Safety Line: You may call (505) 989?6399 anytime to listen to a recorded message.
  • Messenger: The system will send a text message and/or email according to your contact preferences in the NASIS student information system. If you would like to change your contact settings, log?in to the NASIS Parent Portal and request a demographic update.

As winter weather continues, and especially if we have already posted delays, please stay alert for subsequent Messenger texts/emails and television stations postings throughout the day. Please feel free to contact my office with questions or for more information.

Sincerely,
Roy Herrera, Superintendent
