Parent Letter from Student Health Services

Dear Parent or Guardian,
Our mission at the Student Health Center is to serve the students, your children. While school is in session, our clinic is open Monday through Thursday from 8am to 6pm, and on Fridays from 8am to 4 pm. In the event of a serious medical situation involving your child, we will contact you expeditiously. For routine medical care, we ask your child to take the responsibility of informing you. Please review the following information:
Medication Policy
No medications, including over the counter medications, may be kept in the student’s rooms, with the exception of inhalers for asthma, epi-pens for severe allergies, prescription acne creams or ointments, and birth-control pills.
All prescription medications must be brought in to the Student Health Center by the parent or guardian. The Authorization to Administer Prescribed Medications must be completed by the parent or guardian, and the prescribing Physician or Healthcare Provider. These forms are available to download from the SFIS website. If your child is medication, please contact the Student Health Center. We will assist you in making any necessary arrangements so we are prepared to dispense your child’s medication.
Parents must keep a separate supply of medications at home to be taken during weekends or vacations. It is the student’s responsibility to take his/her daily medication to maintain their optimal health and performance. If the student is noncompliant with the medication plan, it could affect his/her good standing at SFIS. Parents are welcome to call and inquire about medication compliance.
Illness and Injury
In the event your child becomes ill or injured at school, and is febrile or experiencing symptoms like vomiting or pain that prevents them from attending class, we will contact you to pick them up. We do not sent ill or injured students home by way of public transportation. If your student participates in sports, we recommend that you would able to attend to that student within a reasonable amount of time as they may be at a higher risk of injury.
If a student’s illness or injury requires treatment at an Emergency Department or to miss school for a prolonged period of time, they will need a medical clearance to return SFIS for both academics and the residential program. If accommodations are needed for your child to return to school or the residential program, they must be ordered in writing by the physician or other health care provider, and established before your child is allowed to return. This also applies to students who may miss school for mental health reasons.

Transportation
If your student becomes ill or injured while attending school and we are able to have them seen at the Indian Health Service hospital, we will transport them there. We do not transport students to appointments off campus that are not made by the staff from the Student Health Center. If your student becomes ill or injured during a weekend or a school break, please have them seen by a health care provider before bringing them back to school. While we may be able to arrange follow up care for them, waiting to bring them back to school when they are sick or injured may prolong their diagnosis as well as their symptoms.
As we head into the cold and flu season we would like to remind you of general precautions. If your child is ill with a cold, flu, or other communicable illness, please keep them home until their illness is not contagious and their symptoms have resolved enough that they may focus on schoolwork. This will also help reduce the spread of the illnesses to other students and staff. Our flu shot clinics are tentatively scheduled for the first 2 weeks in November. If you did not fill out a consent during registration and would still like to, we will have them available in the academic offices and Student Health Center.
Thank you for consideration of our policies and please contact the Student Health Center at 505-989-6358 if you have any concerns.
