Food and Nutrition Services for all SFIS students

This communiqué is to ensure the latest information on feeding Santa Fe Indian School (SFIS) students is communicated with our students, parents, communities and our Governors and Tribal leaders.

As per the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) / Food and Nutrition Services recent directive of August 31, 2020, all School Food Authorities (SFA's) can now feed all children ages 1-18 years of age free meals. Please see  USDA Press Release link  https://www.usda.gov/media/press-releases/2020/08/31/usda-extends-free-meals-kids-through-december-31-2020. This allows all SFIS students to be served in their community school lunch program at no cost. SFIS is urging students to partake in the nutritious meals available to them in their communities.

As you will recall, after all schools returned to the School Breakfast Program (SBP) and National School Lunch Programs (NSLP) and could only feed their enrolled students. SFIS requested a SBP and NSLP regulations waiver from the New Mexico Public Education (NMPED) and Student Success and Wellness Bureau to ensure our students had access to nutritious school meals in their home communities.  SFIS was granted a waiver by the NMPED.

The USDA’s directive signifies the waiver granted to SFIS is no longer in effect and it is not possible for SFIS to utilize at this time. The SFIS administration has thanked all parties involved and has requested to continue working with school districts in the future if the USDA's summer feeding dollars are exhausted, and should the SFA's return to feeding only enrolled students.

Sincerely,

Roy Herrera, Superintendent
