Larkin Vigil is the Principal for the SFIS Middle School. He holds a B.A. in Math and Chemistry from the University of New Mexico, a Secondary Endorsement in Math and Science, an M.A. in School Counseling for K-12 from Adams State College, and his Administrative Endorsement from New Mexico Highlands University. Prior to his appointment at SFIS, Mr. Vigil had developed a wide range of experiences as both teacher and administrator. He served as a teacher in the Dulce Public Schools where he taught High School Chemistry, Physics, Physical Science, and High School Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry. In Dulce, Mr. Vigil was a Science Fair Sponsor, participating in local, regional and state science fairs, and also served as AFT President and was responsible for negotiating the first Union contract for the Dulce Teachers Union.
Mr. Vigil also served the Chama Valley Schools in Tierra Amarilla, New Mexico, as Principal for the Chama Elementary School where he was responsible for overseeing instructional staff, classified staff, buildings, grounds, transportation, athletics and the school budget. He has also served as Principal of the Chama Middle School, Principal at the Tierra Amarilla Elementary School, and as Special Education Director. Mr. Vigil also served as School Counselor for Chama Elementary, Tierra Amarilla Elementary, Canillon Elementary, Chama Middle School and Tierra Amarilla Middle School. At the Middle School level, Mr. Vigil initiated the "Natural Helpers Program," sponsored Close Up and coached Elementary boys and girls basketball and High School basketball.
At SFIS, Mr. Vigil taught Math to the 7th and 8th grades, before becoming Middle School Principal. For SFIS students, he hopes that "Students see the importance of a well rounded education and recognize how an education will have a positive impact on their lives, and that students attending SFIS Middle School will be successful, will enjoy coming to school, will have a good experience, will develop study skills that they can use throughout their studies and to become life-long learners. And that students will be able to intertwine and connect the things they learn at school with their cultural values. When students look back at their experience at SFIS MS, they will be able to tell others that their experience had a positive impact on their lives."
Mr. Vigil has also been a Member of City Council for the Village of Chama, a Member of the Knights of Columbus, and was a Board Member for the Española Hospital. He enjoys the outdoors, including fishing, hunting and camping, and is an athlete and avid sports fan.
