HS Academics Counselor (SY24-25)

Qualifications:

Master's Degree in Counseling; Current NMPED School Counselor License (PreK-12).  Experience working with Native American Students preferred.  Pre-employement background check and U.S. Citizenship is required.

Description:

Under the supervision of the High School Principal, the High School Academic Counselor works with high school grade students to assist the students in their academic work and the development of educational plans by meeting with individual students to determine student interests, graduation requirements, and post high school plans. The Counselor acts as a liaison between the Academic and Student Living departments to ensure acquisition of a quality education.

BASIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Interviews students and parents to ascertain personal interests, academic needs, discuss concerns, and complete career folders.
  2. Oversees course scheduling, course changes and student scheduling
  3. Supports retention of student through interventions and appropriate referrals
  4. Investigates and coordinates appropriate resources and educational opportunities for students.
  5. Coordinate progress reports, report cards, academic conferences, and inform parents/guardians of students’ status.
  6. Schedules and facilitates staffing with appropriate staff, parents, and students.
  7. Attends all required meetings.
  8. Provides personal and group counseling services to meet student needs.
  9. Works under the guidance and input of the principal to track student credits and promotion requirements.
  10. Maintains and updates student academic records in NASIS.
  11. Oversees and facilitates 504 and SAT (Student Assistant Team) process.
  12. Assists Academic and Career Counselors with class scheduling, career plans, and testing.
  13. Write quarterly and other reports documenting counseling and guidance activities as required.
  14. Assists with planning students’ activities.
  15. Meeting with other counselors regularly to organize and coordinate services.
  16. Other duties as assigned by the supervisor and/or the superintendent.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand, walk, and sit frequently or for prolonged periods of time. Ability to travel to school buildings, offices, tribal communities, various events, and other engagements. Ability to perform extensive work at a computer display terminal. Additional physical abilities include lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling up to 30 pounds, stooping/crouching, reaching/handling. Fingering, talking/hearing conversations, and near/far visual acuity/depth perception/color vision/field of vision. 

Safety and Health

Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions. 

Work Environment:

Must be able to work within a various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignment without direct supervision. After-hour work may be required.
