High School Assistant Principal

Qualifications:

Master's Degree preferred; valid New Mexico Administrative License as required by the STate of New Mexico; Five years of experience in School Administration and supervision and/or teaching at the secondary level.  Must pass background check, pre-employment drug screen, and possess a valid driver's license.

Description:

General Description:  The High School Assistant Principal assists the Principal in promoting the educational development of high school students by use of leadership, supervisory and administrative skills, as well as the SFIS Core Values to achieve the school’s vision and mission as articulated in the Ideal Graduate statement. The Assistant Principal manages numerous components of the High School Academic Program under the direction of the Principal.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The High School Assistant Principal must understand and demonstrate the ability to:  Comply with all Board of Trustees policies and administrative regulations.

Instructional Leadership

  1. Participate on the school’s leadership team.
  2. Assist in the establishment of goals and objectives for the school.
  3. Provide leadership in planning, implementing and evaluating instructional programs.
  4. Provide leadership in teaching techniques, innovation, educational technology and class organization.
  5. Represent the administrative team on committees as assigned.
  6. Coordinate student-teachers and other university/community observers within building as assigned.
  7. Manage specific academic departments as assigned (i.e. PASS, Dual Credit, Native Language Teachers, and Summer School).
  8. Represent the Principal at various events.
  9. Administer the school in the absence of the Principal.

 Staff Personnel

  1. Assist in the process of interviewing, evaluating, and selecting new staff members.
  2. Assist in the determination of staff needs.
  3. Assist in working with individual staff needs.
  4. Evaluate personnel and assist in the determination of goals to improve performance.
  5. Prepare formal evaluations as directed by policy and administrative regulations.
  6. Coordinate the revision of the teacher handbook as assigned.
  7. Coordinate teacher mentorship.
  8. Assist principal in continuous supervision of all High School staff.

 Curriculum Development

  1. Assist in the direction, supervision, and evaluation of the building instructional program.
  2. Assist in the maintenance and improvement of the quality of the instructional program by being responsible for teacher implementation of the curriculum.
  3. Assist in providing the leadership necessary to ensure that each teacher is following the curriculum or course of study.
  4. Oversee new course proposal process as requested.
  5. Coordinate, organize, and publish course selection handbook annually as assigned.
  6. Manage student course registration through counseling program as assigned.
  7. Assist in the oversight of developing the master schedule: courses, sections, and teacher schedules as assigned.
  8. Assist with and/or coordinate visitations by educational partners/agencies as assigned.

Pupil Personnel

  1. Assist in the planning and implementing of programs for the health, safety and welfare of the students in the building.
  2. Supervise extra and co-curricular activities in the school at the direction of the high school principal.
  3. Assist with student disciplinary procedures when the disciplinarian is unavailable.
  4. Hear and act on attendance problems referred by attendance counselor.
  5. Coordinate the 504 program; schedule and facilitate IEPs and referrals; maintain the up-to-date IEP records; ensure all staff are aware of students with accommodations.
  6. Approve and maintain record of all academic field trips.
  7. Coordinate special academic programs and award programs as assigned.
  8. Coordinate AP testing and other assessments as assigned.

 Public Relations

  1. Assist in the communication between the school and the community.
  2. Serve as a liaison between the school and the community.
  3. Assist in the development and presentation of parent information and conference evening programs as assigned by the principal.

 Resource Management

  1. Direct and provide input into the preparation and management of the school budget as assigned.
  2. Assist in the preparation and organization of teacher requests for materials, supplies and equipment as assigned by the principal.
  3. As assigned by the principal, monitor the maintenance of the school and school facilities; assist in the security of the building; assist in the supervision of the non-exempt employees; monitor yearly inventories of all textbooks and school equipment.

 Professional Growth

  1. Participate in professional growth activities.
  2. Participate in professional organizations whose purpose is to improve administrative skills.
  3. Participates in decision making, planning and evaluation at the district level.

 Other Responsibilities and Expectations:The Assistant Principal will:

  1. Demonstrate effective leadership skills.
  2. Implement efficient management skills.
  3. Participate on designated committees
  4. Comply with the SFIS Code of Conduct
  5. Perform other duties as assigned by principal 

Knowledge Skills and Abilities: The Assistant Principal will need the following:

  1. Record keeping principles and practices.
  2. Knowledge of and experience with applicable laws, regulations, and emerging practices pertaining to assigned responsibilities, including current issues and trends in education.
  3. Knowledge of and experience working with Pueblos, tribes, and tribally controlled organizations.Organization, time management, task prioritization, and action planning.
  4. Exemplary skills in written and oral language with the ability to communicate respectfully, clearly, and concisely in person, by telephone, and though written forms (e.g., paper, email, text, social media).
  5. High level of integrity, commitment, and work ethic.
  6. Ability to make effective presentations, and produce high quality reports,
  7. Strong problem-solving skills;
  8. Knowledge of safety, quality, and cost objectives
  9. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, administrators, and community in a variety of roles and positions.
  10. Ability to work effectively under pressure.
  11. Ability to use computers, specialized software, and/or other electronic equipment to fulfill job functions.

Supervisory Responsibilities: The Assistant Principal will supervise HS Academic staff at the request of the Principal, and in the absence of the Principal.
